There are bathing machines to hire at the water's edge to allow the more adventurous to swim in the sea and change discreetly into their bathing clothes. | Crowds line the pier in Margate whilst sailing boats can be seen out to sea. By the end of the 19th century Margate was already a well-established holiday resort. Margate Pier was designed by Eugenius Birch in 1856. It was extended in 1875-8 and an entertainment pavilion was built at the pier head. The pier closed in 1976 on safety grounds and was virtually destroyed by a storm on 11th January 1978.

| This photograph of the beach was taken in 1948, with Britannia Pier in the background. Notice the clothing that people are wearing. The men are wearing, shirts, waistcoats and suits to visit the beach. The deck chairs have the initials of Great Yarmouth Council on them, suggesting that they could be hired for the day from the council. One of the boats on the beach seems to be taking passengers out on a trip.
