Teaching Idea What part was played by Britain in the defeat of Germany in WWI?Ask students to look at the photograph, draw their attention to the date that it was taken - 14th September 1914. What can this tell them about Britain's role in WWI? Students should then be given information about enlisting for WWI and the Battle of the Somme (as given in the attached Teacher's Notes). Now ask them to work out what would have happened to most of the men (boys) in the photograph. You could use the worksheet provided to help them do this. This could start a discussion on topics such as patriotism, the 'lost' generation, volunteering and how all of these affect Britain's role in WWI. You may like to focus on the idea of the 'Pals' battalions. Students could be divided into two groups, one to list the positive aspects and the other any negative aspects. Students could finish by writing a short paragraph on ' the importance of the 'Pals' battalions in the battle of the Somme'.
